Abstract
Purpose: Because early detection and treatment of breast cancer could decrease cancer death rate, it is important to know women¡¯s knowledge and concern for breast cancer to plan breast cancer screening program. The purpose of this study is to evaluation of women¡¯s knowledge and screening behaviors for breast cancer in Hwasun-gun JeollaNam-do by survey.

Materials and Methods: This study included 131 inhabitant women, who participated voluntarily in free screening program for early detection of breast cancer. Their ages ranged from 22 to 71 years (mean age; 48 years). Participants above 40 years were 79.4% (n=104). We evaluated breast cancer knowledge and screening behaviors (breast self examination and screening mammography) by survey.

Results: As participants were older, they had more concern about breast cancer. Adherence to breast self examination is higher in aged 40 years and older (65.4%) than aged 39 years and younger (18.5%). Insufficient breast cancer knowledge was reported in the majority of participants regardless age. Of 104 women aged 40 years and older, 36.5% women had been performed mammography according to recommended screening guidelines by National Cancer Center and Korean Breast Cancer Society.

Conclusion: These data suggest that active public relations and education are essential for early detection of breast cancer. This study may be applied to plan and develop screening program.
